Ed, it comes down to what you yourself rise as a question:

IF...IF...IF, as I stated previously to our muppet friend <g>, we were lied to in the past by our own government. How can we trust that what they tell us now in the present is true?

Our history has left us with a problem of credibility. Until we can resolve that problem, you cannot expect others to follow us blindly.
