The Indians are getting there, though the process has involved enormous bloodshed and disorder. They aren't there yet, and they still face some real risks, but so far it's an encouraging story.
Keep a close eye on the resurgent Hindu nationalist movement and its relationship with India's Muslim minority,

I am not sure what your definition of "democracy" is. Since 1947, in India, there has always been an elected Parliament and Prime Minister and President. Same goes for State Legislatures and Chief Ministers of States.

Re "bloodshed and disorder" : show me 1 state that has seceded from the India of 1947. Bloodshed - happens in the US too. and in other countries too. Aint no society I know of that is perfect in all respects.

Re "Hindu nationalist" and "Muslim minority" : India's population is about 1B. Approx 180M is Muslim. That 180M by the way, is more than the population of Pakistan. There are other segments of the population that are represented by religions such as : Budhists, Jains, Christians (Protestant and Catholic), Jews, Parsees etc.

PLEASE do not try to depict India as a Hindu Vs Muslim scenario - it JUST AINT TRUE.
