I think you can at least partially explain it with the Dutch/Boer influence- if you remember who the Boers were (religious zealots, fleeing persecution themselves- ironic, I know). Don't you think that accounts for the difference? The Boers, when compared to the British, had a very different attitude (for the most part) to the native populations. imo
