Russia will not support a US proposal to lift UN sanctions on Iraq if UN inspectors do not confirm the country has no weapons of mass destruction, a Russian foreign ministry official said.

Nice to see that they suddenly care so much about WMDs -g-. Actually, it's not a bad idea to hire experienced UN inspectors to look for WMDs (hopefully we can get Ekeus or Kaye back instead of the amiable Mr. Blix). They will find them this time, and it will be much harder for the carpers to claim they were planted.

"We should determine just what the United State is after - something seems wrong, the approach is too mercenary," he was quoted by Interfax as saying.

"Today the United Nations controls practically nothing in Iraq, so the sanctions will actually be lifted not from Russian companies - which should be working in the region - but from Americans, who will be given the juiciest parts of the Iraqi oil industry," he said.

That's a laugh. What irony.

You didn't expect this ?

In light of France and Russia's attempts to keep Saddam in power ?

In light of the billions each of them are owed ?

Why do you believe they opposed from the get go .... new government can't be expected to pay Saddam's debts.

Kind of like asking concentration camp survivors to pay Hitler's debts.

We'll find out in the future where the funding for the socialist ANSWER organiation came from ....

Need a hint ?
