"Which just means one can't rely on the count to judge the program's effectiveness."

to some extent, i do. and here's why.

KAV did scan 123,000 files.

the only question then is by how many is NAV understating its total when it reports 66,000 files.

i have a suspicion that if NAV was doing as effective a job at scanning as KAV (and it's not, that has been tested and proven), they would be counting files scanned the same way KAV does... which is an accurate, no BS method of counting.

but by counting larger files that contain smaller files as "1", NAV has effectively obscured the facts.

put another way, they would be quite eager to list all they scanned if they scanned as many as some competitors.

i wouldn't be at all surprised to see symantec start changing their "counting methodology" the moment they release a product that has the unpacking technology of some competitors.

but for me to conclude that KAV scanned 57,000 more files on my machine than did NAV would not be correct.

the file counts are, at best, an indicator.
