(Nasdaq:DELL - news) moved past Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - news) in the first quarter to regain its title as the world's largest personal computer maker, helped by seasonal demand that rewarded the company for its large corporate customer base. Dell accounted for 17.3 percent of worldwide PC shipments, market research firm IDC said, compared with Hewlett-Packard's 15.8 percent. The next closest competitor was International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news), with 5.4 percent market share. Market share gains are increasingly important in the PC market because overall industry revenues have stalled in the past few years. Consumers typically buy more computers around the year-end holidays and fewer during the first quarter, according to IDC, of Framingham, Massachusetts. "You would expect that HP, which has a higher consumer mix, would reap more in the fourth quarter than in the first quarter, when vendors with a better commercial mix like Dell and IBM tend to pop back out again," said IDC analyst Roger Kay. HP has been in a fierce battle for the No. 1 PC maker spot since it bought rival Compaq Computer Corp. last May and leapfrogged over Dell to become the leader. Dell took the lead in the third quarter, only to be replaced by HP in the fourth quarter. Dell, which sells PCs directly to its customers, has used its high-volume sales to put pressure on its suppliers and keep prices low. Worldwide PC shipments in the first quarter rose to 34.6 million, a 2.1 percent gain from a year earlier, helped by consumers buying new notebook computers, IDC said. Shipments were off 9.8 percent from the usually strong fourth quarter. Consumer spending was relatively weak, there was no significant rise in commercial activity, and demand was hit by a slow economy and talk of war, IDC said. The fourth largest PC maker was Fujitsu Siemens with 4.8 percent of the market. Toshiba had 3.7 percent, making it into the top five PC makers for the first time. IDC's Kay attributed the move to more demand for notebook computers, which are its specialty.
