Wonder when people will stop "taking exception" in that way?

Maybe when people stop throwing grossly insensitive provocations in their faces. I’m not defending the idea of throwing grenades at missionaries, but these missionaries were essentially uninvited guests, and there are things that uninvited guests, or even invited ones, just don’t say or do in the house of their hosts. I think the key target of blame in this case has to be the people in charge of that missionary effort. If those kids had gotten some proper briefing and training, or if someone a bit more aware of the local context had been on the spot, the whole thing would probably never have happened. Unfortunately, this sort of fundamentalist openly resists any sort of control.

I view the "American fundamentalists" you referred to exactly the same as I do the "American and world extremists" that were in Seattle, destroying property and looting when the WTO was here....

You won’t get any disagreement from me there. One often sees demonstrators who know what they are against, but don’t know what they are for. Those folks didn’t even know what they were against.
