Facts are usually better on their own.

And facts are what they are, whether we like them or not, and whether they fit tidily into our opinion- or not.

Thomas was correct about what wstera termed "compliments" to Saddam. In the early years of the regime, when it was flush with oil money, Saddam built an excellent infrastructure, good health care, inclusive education system... Unfortunately he then invaded Iran and started pouring all his money into the military. The wonderful things he had achieved (which is not saying that he wasn't still the vicious paranoid sociopath we know) deteriorated without support until the country sank back into poverty.

Bias is when we acknowledge or weight more heavily only the facts that fit our opinion. To admit Saddam in his earlier years improved the lot of the people doesn't mean we somehow have a warm fuzzy feeling about him. It is just a fact to fit into the complex equation that is Saddam and Iraq.

The Butcher of Baghdad is probably going easy on him.

The Butcher of Iraq would have been more accurate IMO.......
