Of course, the Presidency in India is primarily a ceremonial post. As it happens, I was among the millions who became part of the funeral cortege for Dr. Zakir Hussain, a wonderful educator and humanist, as it moved through Delhi on a steamy day in May, 1969.

It has been my thought that one of understandable issues in Indian democracy has been the inability to evolve truly national figures other than members of the Nehru family.

Arun, the Presidency is important because its that role that determines "who forms a government" in case of a lack of clear majority in the elections.
