Oh by George! We don't notice these things in USA. :-)

George Bush and Al Gore. One a son of a President and the other of a Senator. I think Indira was more gutsy than either of them.

Indira Gandhi dominated Indian politics from 1966 to 1984 (the year of her assasination) on her own. She had her own mind, fortunately or unfortunately. Particularly brilliant in 1971, in "liberating" Bangladesh (East Pakistan)form Pakistan.

During three years period during the Emergency, She was virtually a dictator. And for a step the few dictators take, She agreed to have elections in 1977. Lost badly. Sat in the opposition for three years and stormed to a big victory in 1980 elections.
