I didn't compare the US under Bush to Iraq under Saddam. I simply said that the broad statement that "people suffered under Saddam" could easily apply to Bush.

I think the implication any reasonable person would have seen there was a comparison. Not that you were saying they were equivalent, just that there was IMO clearly a line of comparison drawn.

We have widespread poverty in this country. Every city in this country has violent slums with homeless, starving people.

I agree. I raised the same issue as a moderate caution on those who continually point to the luxury in which the Iraqi elite lived versus the depradation of the poor. It's good to keep some perspective on the extremes in our own country. Again, not in any sense to say there's equivalence, but just to avoid seeing things in black and white.

The point is that broad statements like this are useless (or worse).

Actually the original statement was "[...]suffered immensely[...]", which was certainly a qualification, and not one you'd find easy to apply to the general populace in America.
