<The missionaries worked to destroy the local culture, and replace it with Western culture. The soldiers worked to destroy >

That is untrue and unfair of Jacob, though it's the line pushed by a lot of greedies looking for a rewrite of history.

Just as our son has adopted Japanese culture because they have the money snowadventures.co.nz and eigokyoshitsu.com and that's the way to improve one's life in Kiwiland, Maoris in the 18th and 19th centuries saw the benefits of adopting English culture and trading with them to get their loot and good stuff.

The missionaries did not aim to destroy. They aimed to enhance and help tribal barbarian head-shrinking cannibals to see the light and adopt the successful ways of the British. Maoris were not stupid and saw the benefits.

Neither did soldiers work to destroy. Soldiers then, as with the Coalition of the Willing, were the courageous people who confronted violent opposition to ensure property rights, human rights, rule of law and civilization. Coaltion of the Willing soldiers have not "worked to destroy". Other than in the narrow sense of destroying Saddam's supports.

British in New Zealand in 1830 were like the USA/UK/Oz in Iraq in 2003. Generally, they were welcome and Maoris signed up to the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. A similar deal should be signed between Iraq and a reconstituted United Nations.

Please note that subtle but crucial word hiding in there.

Mqurice

PS: I am not a tribal barbarian head-shrinking cannibal but can still see the benefits of global trade and freedom for individuals, property rights and democracy. Unlike most Americans, I can also see the benefits of a supranational reconstituted United Nations. Please note that word again.
