Those ancient Greeks were pretty smart, weren't they?

Freedom is fundamental to everything that has life. I will never argue against this. Democracy is not the same thing as freedom. It is only the means to ensure a minimum level of political freedom. Equality of rights and lack of prejudice are in the best interest of the society. It is stupid to be deprived of the benefits of a great leader or a great worker based on their color of skin or their beliefs or their gender. Every society will eventually come to these conclusions. This debate is about the methods of how to best achieve this. Personally I was surprised when I read about how many Iranian women think they are more fortunate than their American "sisters".

There are some basic rights that must be protected. The rights of women to vote, the protection for minorities, freedom of belief, and so on. But it is very naive and dangerous to think that you can transplant the American value system over there and make it work. It is also arrogant to believe our solutions are the best in the world and others should submit to it for their own good.
