America is the game!

Last night, at my neighborhood pub, I casually tossed a question to my friends there (all US born Americans). I asked, "whats the 13th amendment to the Constitution". None of them had an answer. When I answered my question saying "Abolishment of Slavery", they said "huh, how do u know that?". I said, I try to learn, because I want to be a US citizen.

Jefferson declared 'all men are created equal' from nothing.

You overlook the influence of the Scottish Enlightenment. Jefferson's mentor and teacher at William and Mary, William Small was a Scot educated at the University of Aberdeen. He undoubtedly fostered in Jefferson the ideals of liberty and governing with the consent of the governed. The phrases "we hold these truths to be self evident" and "the pursuit of happiness" are a product of the Scottish school.
