Granted, is was quite a while ago, but the bottom line was he failed to keep India united. I believe it's illustrative to note, India's Hindu population was unable to build enough bridges with Islam to live peacefully together, so they opted to divide the nation. From what I gather, perhaps a million people died in wars caused by an inability to find harmony among the different cultures.
Unfortunately, both cultures are still struggling with this problem today.

I really dont know where to start my response. I'll give a shot, and if u have queries, lets take it as it comes.

- I assume "he failed" refers to Mr Gandhi ? If so, IMHO, the people of the region failed.

- ""India's Hindu population was unable to build enough bridges with Islam" : Perhaps you are unaware that there are more muslims in India today, than the population of Pakistan.

- "different cultures" - depends how you choose to define it. India and Pakistan have existed as separate nations for just over 55 years. The same geographical land has existed together for over 5000 years.
