Respond to of 74559 Canadian SARS Death Toll Rises, New Hospital Hit Apr. 19, 2003 17:14 EDT TORONTO - A 99-year-old man has died from the SARS respiratory disease, bringing the death toll from the illness in Canada to 14 and CBC Television said on Saturday a Toronto hospital closed its trauma unit because of fears that health workers might have been infected. But a second hospital on the outskirts of Canada's largest city reopened its emergency unit and said its efforts to contain the outbreak had apparently been successful. The latest figures, updated before the weekend, show that Canada has 304 probable or suspected cases of SARS, most of them in Ontario, the country's most populous province. All but three of the victims of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome were aged over 70 and some suffered from other illnesses. About 7,000 people have been asked to place themselves in quarantine for fear that they might have been in contact with someone who had the disease. Canada is the only country outside Asia where people have died from SARS, which started in China's Guangdong province. Over 170 people have died in Asia and Canada and more than 3,500 people have been infected. CBC Television said Toronto's Sunnybrook hospital had reported a cluster of possible SARS cases affecting up to a dozen health care workers and was turning ambulances away from its emergency room. But a hospital that stopped admitting patients at the early stages of the outbreak, almost three weeks ago, said it was reopening its emergency and maternity departments and will restart elective surgery and outpatient services in the coming weeks. ``This decision speaks to the success of the Hospital's efforts to contain the spread of SARS beyond the initial unprotected exposure from the patient transferred from Scarborough Grace Hospital,'' York Central Hospital said in a statement. ``It is also a testament to the success of the community quarantine of the hospital's staff, patients and visitors.''
