Jim, "At some point in American history, didn't the French help the new colony by fighting off the English? Yes, this is true. Before there was an America the French were instrumental in aiding the colonies. This wasn't pure altruism on the part of the French as they were enemies of Britain and it was to their sovereign interests to thwart the British in every manner they could. Nonetheless, America has always been grateful for the French contribution to our revolution and I believe the Americans have paid back the good deed of France at least a hundred times over.
