Yes I read that article and it is very interesting. It does not however answer your hypothesis that:

It is obvious by now that America derives little, if any, economic benefit from its power, compared to the costs.


I have no reasons to believe the private sector is not going to reap rewards in 12 digit gains over then next 20 years. Nor is it obvious to me that the reconstruction cannot pay for itself over shorter periods of time. And finally it is not clear to me why you do not think that having established military bases all over the world America is not reaping their economic benefits simply by pointing them out and implying the consequences of using (or removing them).

I am all ears to hear opinions on these issues...btw, about that NYT article, it seems to me the foreigners have so much of their money tied up here, that they have the tiger by the tail. I don't see how they can threaten to make a run on the dollar.
