If Kerry uses his personal funds, he is going to have decline federal matching funds. That might be the smart move for him. The Bush people, who will decline federal funding, are talking about raising as much as $250 million. Remember that if you take the matching funds, your pre-nomination spending is capped. Assuming that Kerry prevails amongst his fellow Democrats, he would probably be out of funding next spring. Bush would pound on him for five or six months and he would not be able to respond. That is what happened to Bob Dole in 1996.

Did he reimburse his wife for all those private jet flights his campaign used? He has used family money. Lots of it.
