"Sophisticated international blackmail" is what Senator Arlen Specter called it yesterday. Blackmail is the apt word: unless the U.S. and Britain turn over primary control of Iraq to the U.N. — none of this secondary "vital role" stuff — Chiracism threatens to hobble oil sales and prevent recovery.

The only word I would quibble with is "sophisticated". Yes, I hope Safire's and Krauthammer's views play out. Moveover, my money says they will - particularly as it's France that is leading this charge in yet another folie de grandeur. Perhaps Colin Powell will dress it up in a few diplomatic niceties, but if we didn't pay blackmail to North Korea, we're not going to pay it to France.
