Intel Resumes Shipping New Pentium 4 Chips

story.news.yahoo.com

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) on Monday said it has resumed shipping its latest Pentium 4 microprocessor after developing a software patch to fix an unidentified glitch that halted shipments last week.

Intel spokesman Tom Beermann said an "anomaly" was found in a small percentage of the 3 Gigahertz Pentium 4 chips. He said he could not say how many chips were affected or elaborate on the problem.

"It was found only in a lab environment under stress testing ... not in typical every day use," he said.

Intel, the world's largest maker of semiconductors -- the brains of computers -- is informing its PC maker customers that they can use the software patch and resume shipments of their systems, Beermann said.

Intel announced a week ago that it was rolling out the new Pentium 4 with an 800 Megahertz system bus, and a new 875P chipset, aimed at the high end of the computing market for uses such as making an Internet phone call while streaming digital music.

On Sunday, Intel cut prices of its fastest microprocessors for desktop and laptop PCs by as much as 38 percent, following its tradition of slashing chip prices in advance of faster models.
