I watched Hafez Assad cleverly play his chess for decades. He usually seemed about 2 moves ahead of his opponents. History is replete with sons that fail to live up the exploits of their dictatorial fathers. There are more than 10 failures for every Alexander. Since his assumption of power, I been trying to get a read on Bashar (just as I have on the young ruler of Jordan). No definitive opinion yet. But I expect that the next five years will "tell the tale". With its invasion of Iraq, the US has "upset the Middle East applecart". In such a time of turmoil, the superior shine, and the inferior fade.
