The Iraq episode seems to have consolidated the "news as entertainment" trend dramatically. Once reporters opted to ride on the tanks and give breathless accounts of racing across the desert, they lost their perspective on the wider issues.

The only consolation for moderates is that both conservative and liberal swings never last in America. The conservative heyday of the 1950's ended in a liberal backlash, ditto the Reagan 1980's. Hollywood has long been dominated by liberals while conservatives are grabbing more of the regular media - for now.

If the 00's are a temporary conservative era on the surface, a generation of impatient youth will shake things up in a few years. The conservative fantasy that America will revert to an Ozzie and Harriet existence is just that, a fantasy. The social changes from the late 20th century are irreversible.

Politics and media may go backward but people don't, not for long.
