MON,
Back from vacation today. Hadnt seen news for a week, just what was on the car radio. Two things strike me, turning on CNN for the first time today--the joy in the eyes of the shiites celebrating a religous holiday in Karbala for the first time in 30 years; the joy in the eyes of the Kurds welcoming Jay Garner.
The "nervous nellies" are now warning us of a shiite islamic state in iraq--another way of justifying their opposition to the war. Others will point to a Kurdish move toward independence and the collapse of iraq into 2 or 3 or 4 separate states.
Both of the these scenarios are unlikely. Shiites in Iraq are a majority of the population but live in a diverse state unlike iran. What they are after is freedom of religion and a say in the governing process. Kurds recognize a Kurdish state would be a lose lose scenario. Shiites need to keep their new found freedom of religion. Kurds need a federal solution for iraq. And Sunnis need to be welcome into the state as well as most of the educated elite are sunni.
Nothing is for certain but after a weeks vacation, i come back more optimistic than ever and more confident in our decision to fight this war. Mike
PS "....and the Israeli's don't give a damn about dead Arab children, only dead Jewish children" WRONG! Israelis always have cared but they have been hardened by the actions of the Palestinians against their own Israeli children. After all who attacks pizza places and school busses? But still most care deeply.
