The world will be safer in the sense that taking 20 million guns off the streets in the US would make us relatively safer but still leave a couple hundred million out there to threaten everyone else. Some people think the security gain in Iraq was proportional to the price, some do not.

I expect Iraq to be a disappointing rathole that sucks in resources and effort and produces a mediocre result at best over time. Just my guess based on what I have seen from afar the past few weeks (I have no direct experience in the Arab world).

I did learn, however, that democracy only works when you have genuine democrats (small "d") on the ground in the local populace to make it work. If the Shiites stick together and agitate for a strict regime and the Kurds react by clinging to autonomy and the Sunnis are too few and too scared to say boo, Iraq is in for a helluva mess.

Democracy is not a Duncan Hines cake mix we can whip up in 20 minutes with a couple of eggs. I hope it works in Iraq - but I wouldn't wager much on it.

JMHO as always.
