Re Wolfram - You must be referring to his latest book "A Different Kind of Science", where he apparently goes into great length into cellular automata, and claims that the order of the universe can be expressed in several lines of code. I read several reviews on it, and will read it. Possibly this summer...

What do you know, he might be on to something. The rule he discusses DOES give an interesting (and asymmetrical) outcome of garbage on one side and order on the other.

While it is debatable if Wolfram put the last 10 years of his life to good use, we should probably not be so fast to dismiss his work. Einstein was in his twenties and working as a patent clerk somewhere when he first published the Theory of Relativity, working with pen and paper, and going on pretty much only "What if a train was to go close to the speed of light?" and "Gee, acceleration feels like gravitation. What if they are the same thing?" etc... Needless to say, his work was ridiculed for a long time.
