MK, Not according to those who served in the Pacific or in Africa. The Battle of Britain broke the Luftwaffe and the British destroyed the German Navy. As I mentioned to Mike M., the Russians were less than a sideshow against the Japanese. Russia would have had a tough time had Japan taken China, Germany controlled Middle Eastern Oil and the Luftwaffe that attacked Britain attacked them.

Martin, I think the Russians suffered the greatest losses of all the combatants . They lost 300,000 taking Berlin. There is no doubt that without US involvement the war between Germany and the Soviets would have been much more costly and prolonged - perhaps a stalemate. Recently released documents suggest that Stalin was seriously considering a negotiated peace with Germany. One might argue that without the hope of US involvement taking some of the pressure off the Soviets that a negotiated peace would have been more likely.
