That's the way most Empires fall: Overreach, arrogance, making too many commitments that you can't withdraw from without losing face, spending too much, piling up debt.



In the very long run it certainly is unsustainable. The US won't be on top forever, certainly not so far out on top as it is now. However the military spending is quite sustainable amounting to about 4% of GDP, a lower level then it has been during most of the time from 1942 until the mid 90s.

Maybe so, but nobody knows how long an empire will last. Some last decades, some hundreds of years.

This one hasn't been around long enough to predict its demise. You may as well learn to enjoy it while it lasts.;^)
