Just calculate the odds before going crazy. The US has some 35 confirmed cases and they are probably quarantined. Even if they are not, the chance that any person has SARS in the US is 1 in 9 million. Not every Asian has relatives in Hong Kong that they are constantly visiting. If one is working behind the counter, one cannot afford too many vacations. Besides, people have cut back on vacations to Hong Kong and other SARS hot spots. Let's say that Asians are twenty times more likely to be exposed to SARS as a worst case scenario. In a worst case analysis, her probability of having SARS is less than 1 in 500,000. Even if you assume that your chance of catching SARS is 100%, then your chance of having caught SARS is 1 in 500,000. Given the mortality of SARS is 1 in 10, the chance that you will die from SARS in the worst case analysis is 1 in 5,000,000. About the same chance as winning a Lotto pick 6 with 42 numbers (1 in 5.25 million). I bet you have never won the big prize at Lotto. Looks like you will have to live with that. If you are a middle aged man in America (45 to 50 years old), the chance that you will die in the next year is about 1 in 400 to 1 in 500. Relax and enjoy your life. SARS is not worth worrying about yet. If we get to 350,000 cases of SARS in America then the threat from SARS will approach the threat from all other causes, assuming you are a 45 to 50 year old man in America.
