Anglican military chaplain ignites row with Australian Jews

By The Associated Press

CANBERRA
- The Anglican chaplain of Australia's defense forces apologized to the country's Jewish population Wednesday after blaming a mix of Judaism and Zionism for Israel's problems.

Bishop Tom Frame ignited a religious row when during a national radio address over Easter he said the confluence of Judaism and Zionism in Israel was one of the main reasons that country was still embroiled in conflict with its neighbors.

"And when those two things are brought together we see many places where there's a real ugliness of the type that seems not to be compatible with the desire for peace and justice for anyone," said Frame, the Anglican chaplain for the Australian Defense Force.

Frame's comments angered Australia's Jewish community. One Jewish group in the state of New South Wales demanded Frame withdraw his comments and apologize, or be removed from his position with the defense forces.

"It seems to me that the views expressed which are effectively anti-Jewish at least and are inconsistent with government attitudes on the same issues, ought not be expressed by someone in an official position," said Stephen Rothman, head of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies.

But Frame said he made the comments as a member of the clergy and not in his role with the defense force, and he said the Jewish community had overreacted.

"My comments were those of a churchman, of an individual who has leadership with the church," Frame said. "My comments were not designed to offend and if any offense has been caused, it's regretted on my part and I apologize for it."

You do notice that the above article is about a Protestant, Anglo-Saxon chaplain, don't you? Don't you find it worrisome that more and more angry voices (over Israel) are heard from that sociological corner? The Protestant constituency is Israel's last ally... If I were a Likudnik, I'd start pondering seriously about these little chinks that pop up here and there on the so far smooth surface of the Judeo-Protestant compact...
