'Do you think that Gingrich chose this moment for his attack on Foggy Bottom on his own, or is this the opening shot of a coordinated campaign? "?
Nadine,
Interesting question. My first response would have been no but after a bit of thought, the demise of Paul O'Neill and Larry Lindsay come to mind. Powell is a very popular figure and bringing him down might be like that statue of Saddam--at first a difficult task and then easy after the heavy equipment is brought in. Who would replace Powell would be my question? It will never happen but it would be a far more interesting place if John McCain was heading it up, dont you think? Mike

If I were a praying type, I would be offering several right now that it's not only part of a coordinated campaign but that it's successful. No better way to lose the 04 election.

I have followed Gingrich for a long time. He had his "down" when he lost the Speakership and had personal problems. You will notice that all the Media stories on this speech make sure you know about this.

The guy is a crusader. You go back to his getting in Congress in 78. He was one of the first to take advantage of CSPAN to make speeches from the well. He took on and forced the resignation of the Dem speaker, and proved he was a crook. Until Bush, I don't know of any Republican who was hated as much by the Dems. But without him, the Repubs would never have got the House in 94.

I watched him give this speech yesterday, and I think he is outraged at the way State is treating our Foreign Policy, and wants to change it. He probably cleared it with Cheney and Rumsfeld, but not necessarily.
