I once worked with a guy who recalled, quite lucidly, walking home at about 10:00pm the night of the 1987 crash. He usually drove, but needed to clear his head and had been working on trying to sort out order tickets for the past five hours.

It was a cool fall evening, and he remembered specifically walking by the lobby of a certain popular New York bank and seeing six or eight people waiting on line at an ATM (which was a fairly new technological development at the time).

He told me (roughly), "I had a moment of personal panic, thinking to myself: is this what a bank run looks like in the 1980s?"
