I see Syria sliding our way.

I see elements in the Syrian government aligning with the US, if only because of the shared threat of Islamic fundamentalism (remember what Hafez Assad and his other son did to Hama):

But I don't see Syria going democratic for some time.. Not until the fundamentalist elements are suppressed through economic growth that overshadows the economic despair upon which militant Islam is dependent. But I see them opening up economically since they no longer have Saddam's regime to subsidize them.

Might be time to have some real Israeli- Palistinional talks going on. That's the final cure to the ME problems.

I think we're seeing some progress now that Arafat has been "encouraged" to stop being an impediment. But I'm under few delusions that the creation of a Palestinian state will be a "final cure". The final cure will come from economic opportunity for the people of the region as intertwining of business interests that make the thought of regional conflict with Israel too painful to bear.

Getting the Arabs and Israelis to do business with one another in a mutually beneficial relationship will go far towards allaying the decades of racist rhetoric and contrived hatred by those who sought to use the conflict as a source of distraction and propaganda.
