U.S. Planners Surprised by Strength of Iraqi Shiites

Shows how little they know. Shiites have had nearly 1000 years to perfect the best opposition political party the world has seen. If you don't believe me read Prof. Shariati's book Shia the Complete Party (Shia Hezb Tamam). I am not saying I like what they have to say. I don't. But if you really study the system, you can't help but marvel at its perfection...btw have you read about Hasan Al-Sabah? Here's a book on just one of the "less" perfect Shia movements amazon.com I say perfect because they did not last well enough into the future. But you have to wonder if that is the right term for an organization that with only a few thousand followers managed to have access even to the Emperor's bedroom and win their battles with minimum bloodshed. They put a dagger next to the Sultan's pillow with a note for him to read after he wakes up, "If it had not been for the sincere respect with have for his majesty, this dagger would have more easily found its way into his soft chest". Another Sultan sent his Vazir to talk them into surrender. Hassan gave the guy a tour of the castle. Then he looked at a guy and said "kill yourself". The man stabed himself in the throat right away. Hasan looked at the next guy and said "kill yourself", the man praised Hasan and jumped off the window. Then Hasan looked at the Vazier and said, "I have over ten thousand men like these. How many are willing to die for the King this way?". Sultan's army returned without a fight. Anyway, where Isma'ilis failed, other branches of Shia studied their failure and found better methods. And that was nearly 700 years ago.

Oh, as if they weren't warned over and over and over.

"They expected a much warmer reception, and as a result it would be unnecessary for them to deal with some of these issues," said Kenneth M. Pollack, a Brookings Institution scholar, who was one of President Bill Clinton's top Iraq specialists. "That flawed assumption is at the heart of some of the reasons they are scrambling now."

Yep.
