I'm new to this thread. Could you direct me to your proposed solution? In the case of Iraq, continued containment lost the argument in the Bush cabinets. It seems France, in particular, had more than philosophical reasons not to use force to change the political landscape there. I like the idea of the UN and other serious bodies in world politics raising the bar for acceptable behavior from governments. If they and sophisticates like France and Germany can't get the job done collectively, then somebody needs to step up. US, Britain, the Aussies, and others did. Now the old-liners want a piece of the economic pie and to protect all the business ties they had developed with SH. Puny principles IMHO, and I fail to hear a winning case being made. It sounds like same-old politics and sour grapes that Hussein was removed so easily.
