Of course, AJ, as you can see from John's chart (http://www.boomspeed.com/jimson/AAII4-23-03.gif) it's not historic. It certainly should give bulls pause, but looking at the data, there have been many lower bear readings and a few higher bull readings... and these spike highs haven't yet market the high readings in the market on a weekly basis, looks like.

Anyway, don't get me wrong. Quite a stat. And since I know you're not looking for the high being in just yet, it fits nicely with your scenarios as I know them. Just thought I'd link the chart over here, too, so everyone could put it in context.

Watch what they do, not what they say:

cboe.com

On a side note, I deal with the manager of a 60 broker Smith Barney office and a broker with 25 years at a Morgan Stanley 45 broker office. Neither knows one another. Both say for all practical purposes, retail business is "dead". "No client enthusiasm at all" Their words not mine.

aj,
Time for a contrary thinking check up. If the trend has changed, these people are right. During a trend the masses are right and its at the turns that they're wrong. So just as I expect the vix to go lower once this correction is over, it won't surprise me that bulls become larger in number as equity prices rise. All we have to do is think back to the late 90's to see how bullishness can be rampant but we still continue to rise. This should be a short term correction and as far as that goes these numbers are good as they should facilitate this correction. We need to shake some peaches from the tree.
