That's so true.
It makes me so sad that some people are robbed of their native languages. Even in this supposedly more enlightened time I have Hispanic kids who are a bit reticent about sharing the fact that they are bilingual. I encourage my Spanish speaking students to read in both Spanish and English. They have a real asset, being able to speak and read two languages, and I don't want to see them lose it.

Of course we've had problems in California with teachers who taught in Spanish at the expense of teaching English, but the answer is to support both languages. What we are doing right now is wrong, imo.

I love French. I wish I'd continued my Spanish, though, since I have to pick it up now.
