Sony, Toshiba Alliance Closing on Intel, with Four 300mm Lines

April 25, 2003 (TOKYO) -- Leveraging expansion of their mass-production lines, the alliance between Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp has taken a leap forward to establish itself as the second largest chipmaker following to Intel Corp.

Through their plans to install 300mm-wafer production lines that were separately announced on April 21, the allied companies have hammered out a strategy to close on Intel in terms of production.

As was indicated in the announcements, a total of four 300mm mass production lines are to be introduced at fabs in Kumamoto Prefecture by Sony, in Nagasaki Prefecture by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI), and in Oita Prefecture as well as in Yokkaichi City by Toshiba.

Only Intel, with a view to installing five new 300mm lines by 2005, has so far made public its intention to set up fabs on a larger scale.

Meanwhile, other domestic LSI makers have passed through the final stages of streamlining and are about to take proactive measures to resume investments on a full scale. The alliance has sought to take a lead in the industry.

In terms of the scale of plans for 300mm lines, the alliance also surpasses other individual LSI makers worldwide, such as Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, Ltd (TSMC), and Geneva-based STMicroelectronics.
