Oh, people know over time... or in many cases, right away. They know something doesn't feel right. In many cases it's just part of the 'deal'... ie. "Oh, he's just trying to sell me that car"... or whatever. You know he's BSing, but that's part of what you might expect... OTOH, people like that end up not getting invited to dinner too often or staying married long vs the salesman that is truely a straight shooter :)

In foreign policy, I would argue that the goal is to have a true personal relationship [marriage] vs the 'sales job'. If not, then let the corperations have the relationship.
