I was an auditor with the OIG. I quickly got a reputation for detecting/exposing fraud, so it became my area of specialization. I often got to work on assignments that had the potential for fraud. We never lost a case we prosecuted. We frequently got the criminals to plead out rather than go to trial, another huge savings to taxpayers. Sadly, the judges were often far too lenient on these criminals. They frequently got short sentences & rarely had to disgorge much, if any, of their ill gotten gains. However, that wasn't my responsibility. I just gathered enough evidence to assure they were guilty nine ways to Sunday. I took my pleasure in the fact that these criminals were stopped from continuing these crimes, often stealing millions a year, sometimes tens of millions a year from the govenrment. And it stopped them from harming thousands of unwitting people who had no idea they had been sucked into a scam that was meant only to profit the crooks.
