Hi David: The parasite invades the red blood cell, so the white cells would need to recognize the invaded cells and destroy them. As you know, recognizing self is one of the big, nice, absolutely essential properties of the immuno system, so the evolution sort of decided against it. Otoh the sickle cell anemia (Haemoglobin variant) is a result of 10 if not hundred thousand years of dealing with this parasite - it is one of the genetic diseases that humanity was pressured in exactly due to malaria.
