I take your point on the economy. It is indeed in bad shape, and as you point out, the States are a disturbing indication of this. Anybody who has been out of work these past months/years will tell you how ugly it is. We do not have any effective leadership on the economy. Really, when you look at the national scene, the quality of political leadership is just going lower all the time. I find no comfort looking at the low profile of the Dems btw.
