And also with religion. I meant that the colonies/early US did not have an aristocracy or upper class that primarily devoted itself to intellectual pursuits such as philosophy, literature, art, etc. Anyone who did that would have probably starved to death anyway. The leaders in early America were ministers, businessmen, farmers, or even (gawdelpus) lawyers. :-/
