XBrit,
I saw your point but it is certainly misleading to infer alpha radiation is not hazardous after a few centimeters.

Yes alpha may not penetrate the skin but it can cause serious injury to the skin...That is why a coverup is recommended.
Alpha presents other hazards to humans too.
If you inhale, ingest or absorb radioactive chemicals emitting alpha, they can cause serious damage to the organs. If they attach to bone, they can cause bone cancers or leukemia. Alpha particles and/or beta particles in the lungs can cause lung cancer.

That is why it is harmful to have our water, food and air in contact with these materials. It is also why I teach that you reduce your risk by reducing your exposure and it is of prime importance to avoid all fallout zones and/or to exit them quickly if you are in one. Each American should have this easily learned skill. Even the Homeland Security folks admit they do not have the answers for you...Here is a direct quote from Ready.gov
Use available information to assess the situation. If there is a significant radiation threat, health care authorities may or may not advise you

I accept that statement at face value...My beef is that they do not go on and teach you how to assess the situation. Ready.gov has similar statements for chemical and bio disasters. They leave it up to each of us to figure out what to do.
