"One of these days when I have the time, I will research when, how, and why Old Testament was included in Bible and how did it come to be so influential. If anyone here knows the answer I'd appreciate the knowledge."

In my opinion, the Old Testament is included primarily to give the context and background for Christ's appearance. The moral teachings of the two Testaments are actually contradictory in many respects ("an eye for an eye" versus love, forgiveness and grace). To me, the main purpose of the Old Testament is to document the numerous prophecies of a Messiah, all of which were fullfilled by Christ (Messiah Yeshua).

Without the New Testament, of course there is no CHRISTianity. Without the Old Testament, IMHO Christ's appearance would not have been as significant due to His exact fulfillment of OT prophecy. Even Christ's rejection by his own people (Jews) was prophecied, so it is little wonder most continue to do so today.

I agree with Jacob that you should focus on the actual text of the Bible. Much of what has been added by today's various denominations (the Pope, Protestant denominations, etc) are nowhere to be found in actual Biblical text. When I hear someone questioning Christian actions, you can usually find something that was NOT in the Bible itself (especially Christ's teachings).
