NATIONAL PENTAGON RADIO

Hi Jerry,

We'll have to agree to disagree about National Pentagon Radio. I've listened to them since the early 1980's, and I'm more disappointed and concerned today than ever before.

The main commentators and news reporters we get to hear, at least via OPB in Oregon, are all at least slightly right of center. The old "gold standard" of ethical reporting, Daniel Schorr, excepted.

Look at the list. Neil Conan, Scott Simon, Nina Totenberg, Mara Liasson, Cokie Roberts are all clearly to the Right. Though they'd like to portray themselves differently. But there is no one on NPR who consistently advocates for a progressive populist position. There are no champions of the politics of Paul Wellstone, Howard Dean, Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader or any of the uncorrupted and uninfiltrated NGOs of this world.

NPR serves up the Bush lies in as obsequious a fashion as any of the other stations. Not as bombastic and over the top as the Faux News Network, of course. But there is no spine to NPR's coverage of the Mal-administration. There is no trenchant analysis. There's no coverage of the point of view of the "enemies" of the Bushista/Likudnik line.

We get totally distorted coverage of the Israel/Palestine conflict. We get no insight into the origins of this conflict. We get no discussion of the more than 50 vetoes of proposed UN sanctions against Israel's illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza by NPR. What we get is bias. And blinders. Far from telling us the truth, NPR is creating a fantasy about the Middle East.

And coverage of European Union issues? Hey, fuggedaboutit. It doesn't interest them.

Coverage about the distortions that the military-industrial complex is imposing on our economy? Nope, can't do it. Can't go there.

Frank discussion of the Belgian war crimes court case against Tommy Franks? Again, the American people need to be sheltered from opposing viewpoints on our naked aggression in Iraq.

NPR used to be a contenda. Now it's a mere shadow of what ought to be a very useful tool for democracy.
