When I had "atypical pneumonia" last summer I was told that they would bring in the CDC if there was any known epidemic to be concerned about, but since none had been declared, they were going to assume that I was simply a special case. I was repeatedly hospitalized and put on a ventilator because I could no longer breathe on my own -- I ran a temperature of 101 to 104 four four months and was treated with everything known to mankind. The only thing that had any effect was steroids. All of this developed after a trip a year ago to Guangzhou (May 2002). I do not believe that the US medical system is perfect at spotting new serious shit. This was at Kaiser Medical by the way, which is supposed to be pretty good at these things.

Johnny Chen posts on this thread occassionally !!

Oh my god! And all along I thought his paranoid rambling was a psycological disorder - now I realize it was just another SARS symptom.

(j/k actually)
