I think the key here is that there is a path to verify or experience the findings on your own. Science does provide you with a path that if you were so inclined, you could achieve the same results. Buddhism does show you a path that at least leads to the experience of "liberation" (and some fairly unbelievable physical feats to go with it). But there is no path that leads to the experience of raising the dead or talking to God.

I would argue, that if in fact there is a God who is both wise and purposeful, then the need for prophets, messengers, and similar personalities is only on limited basis and for special cases only. My reasoning goes something like this: one creates things in a manner that is naturally conducive to their purpose. For example you would create a sphere if the goal is for it to move around easily. You would not make a car with cubical tires, even though given enough force you could make such a car run. Therefore if there is a purpose for the creation of human beings, that purpose is embedded in them. Most of the times, they'd be moving along the desired path on their own accord the way a river flows. Sending special envoys then is just something that needs to be done at special junctures, no?
