Wells Fargo Beefs Up Online Bill-Paying Service

By Tara Siegel Bernard

NEW YORK -- Nobody likes the sound of tearing checks from their checkbook - and several banks are working to eliminate the monotonous task while making paying bills less time-consuming.

Wells Fargo & Co. is the latest bank to beef up its online bill-payment service, which, in addition to giving customers the ability to pay bills online, also has a newly expanded list of companies that can present their bills to customers in one spot on the bank's Web site. The San Francisco bank is set to announce on Tuesday that its roster of so-called e-billers has grown to more than 240, and includes companies from Home Depot Inc. (NYSE:HD - News) , Nordstrom Inc. (NYSE:JWN - News) and Sprint Corp. to Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. (NYSE:HE - News) .

The numbers of online-banking customers has continued to rise over the past several years, slowly but surely. About 20% of Internet users in the nation were active online bankers at the end of last year, and about 12% of those customers paid at least one bill through their bill-payment service, a 42% rise since the beginning of the year.

"The rate at which consumers are adopting online banking and bill-payment services ranks these two activities among the fastest growing on the Internet," noted Mike Sinco, director of analytics for comScore Financial Services Solutions. "However, individual banks are achieving varying degrees of success in bringing customers online. . ."
