Interesting. A lot of other sentiment indicators, like VIX and AAII, give the complete opposite impression.

New York Stock Exchange Issues Monthly Short Interest Report

NEW YORK, April 22, 2003 - The New York Stock Exchange today reported short interest as of the close of business on the settlement date of April 15, 2003, reflecting transactions through April 10, 2003.

Based on information received from members and member organizations, short interest increased to 8,058,072,705 shares on April 15, 2003 from 7,996,276,851 shares on March 14, 2003.

The short interest on April 15, 2003 was equal to 2.3 percent of the total shares on the Exchange.

This is only slightly shy of the record shares reported on Oct. 15, 2002 8,204,136,783
